Whether it’s leading the country, leading a football team, or leading a business, to be a great leader there are some core principles for success. We’ve listed below some of the key points that make a well-rounded and effective leader in the workplace.
1. Honesty
This may seem obvious, but honesty in a leader is essential. You can never gain trust or respect if you’re dishonest. Whether you’re lying to your staff and promising a raise where there won’t be one or saying that they’re doing a great job when they aren’t, have the courage to be an honest leader and your team will only benefit.
2. Accountability
Poor managers shift the blame, strong managers take accountability for their actions. Whether the team has made a mistake, or you’ve taken a decision that backfired, accountability is key. When your team sees you won’t throw them under the bus as easy targets, they’ll trust you as a genuine leader.
3. Decisiveness
It’s easy to lose confidence in a leader that can’t make a tough decision when necessary. If you’re easily swayed by the influence of others, or you can’t make the right decision under pressure, this can make your team feel uneasy.
4. Courage
Being bold doesn’t mean being brazen, some people are naturally more fearless than others. Fulfil your role as an amazing leader and practice fearlessness if it doesn’t come naturally. For staff to believe in your vision they need to know you have the courage to carry it through.
5. Passion
Having someone that truly cares about what they do is inspirational, the best leaders have endless energy and passion. If you’re passionate about what you know it’ll come through and trickle down to your team, this passion will help motivate them to try new things, come up with new ideas and become the best they can be.
People Management is at the heart of any successful business and retaining the best people available is vital to progress in an increasingly competitive market.
It is often said that people leave bad managers however is the questions ever asked if those managers where provided with the support, skills and knowledge to be set up for success?
The main challenge
for any People Manager is: How can we improve ourselves to become better
people managers and leaders enabling higher employee retention, performance,
motivation and engagement?
Any
costs involved in the training, development, health and well-being of your staff
should be considered an investment. Why? Because the people within an
organisation or business should be recognised as essential assets, contributing
to growth and development in the same way that physical assets such as
machinery, equipment and money do. It is therefore impossible to ignore People
Management as an important skill for any leadership role within your company.
